The last Roman chariot race took place in 549 CE at the Circus Maximus. Chariot Racing was very popular and got audiences enthused whenever they were staged. However, they were extremely dangerous as well. As very popular sports sometimes do, the sport transcended the arena, and carried over into the public lives of the fans.

Chariot racing was not invented in Rome. The Greeks definitely had chariot racing and possibly the Etruscans before the Romans. The sport caught on in Rome, at first in connection with religious festivals. It gained in popularity and the Romans refined it and professionalized it. The Etruscan king, Tarquinius Priscus was the first to build the Circus Maximus, a permanent place for the races instead of the open fields that were previously used.
