In 1947, Jackie Robinson was the first black player to play professional baseball in the Major Leagues.
However, black people had been playing baseball almost since baseball was invented. Because blacks weren't allowed to play with whites, all-black teams started forming after the US Civil War, and by the 1880's, the so-called "Negro Leagues" were formed. The Negro Leagues lasted until the end of the 1950's, when they died out- they were no longer needed since blacks were finally starting to be accepted in Major League Baseball.
