The Premier League used to be called the Football League First Division but in 1992 the teams in the Premier League branched off from this championship. There is really no reason that the Premier League is called the Premier League other than Premier meaning good and needing to incorporate "League" in the name. Note that at the moment the Premier League is called the Barclays Premier League because of sponsorship (Barclays being the bank.)

Preston North End won the first 2 premier leagues (called First Division then). And if your talking first premier league as in the premiership then that was Man United in the early 90's.

There are a few answers to that. They first won the Premier League in 1993. However, at that time it was not sponsored by Barclays. BarclayCard sponsored it from 2001 to 2004, with Manchester United first winning it in 2003, and Barclays sponsored it from 2004, with Manchester United first winning it in 2007.
Queens Park Rangers have never won the Barclays Premier League, or the old First Division equivalent of it.
