The Victorian Football League commenced as a formal entity in 1896 with the following 8 clubs:
Geelong, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, St. Kilda, Fitzroy (now the Brisbane Lions), Melbourne and South Melbourne (now the Sydney Swans).
In 1897, the competition began in earnest with Essendon being the Champions.
In 1990, the competition was nationalized to form the AFL, with the following line up of teams at the time:
Geelong, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, St. Kilda, Brisbane Bears, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Sydney Swans, Footscray, Hawthorn, Richmond and West Coast Eagles.
There have now been many more interstate teams added since that time.
