The very first Stanley Cup winner was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. Montreal AAA for short. They were also known as the Montreal Hockey Club. They won in 1893. They were awarded the Cup as they were the AHAC champions. In 1894, they beat the Ottawa HC.
The first team to win the Stanley Cup when NHL teams were able to win the Cup was the Toronto Arenas in 1917 against the Vancouver Millionaires (PCHA).
The first team to win the Stanley Cup when the NHL teams only competed for the Cup was the Ottawa Senators against the Boston Bruins in 1927
The Montreal Canadians won the Cup in 1916 but they were not a member of the NHL as the league wasn't founded until the 1917/18 season. The first NHL champions were the Toronto team known as the Arenas. Since the Cup wasn't sole property of the NHL at that time, the Toronto team actually had to beat a team from Vancouver to claim the Stanley Cup.
The NHL was formed in 1917 and played its first season in 1917/18. The winner of the Stanley Cup was the Toronto team simply known as the Arenas. Two things should be noted here:
1. The Cup was not solely an NHL trophy at that time. The NHL champions, the Toronto team, actually had to win against a team from Vancouver which was not a member of the NHL. 2. The Montreal Canadiens actually won the Cup in 1916 before the NHL was founded so they are not considered to be the first NHL team to win the Cup.
According to The Puck Report, the 1988 Edmonton Oilers needed only 18 games.
Four teams (New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Phoenix Coyotes, Los Angeles Kings) remain alive in the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, collecting 8 of the 16 wins required to capture the Stanley Cup. The Rangers needed all 14 games in their first two series to amass eight victories whereas the Kings used only 9 games to complete the task. This begs the question, how long does it typically take a team to rack up 16 wins.
Since the 1987 expansion of each round to seven games, none have swept all four rounds to win in 16 games or skated a seventh game in each series using all 28 games. During this span, the Edmonton Oilers lay claim to the hastiest hoist using only 18 games in 1988 with the Carolina Hurricanes (2006) and Boston Bruins (2011) being the tardiest at 25. The average number of games needed over the past 24 postseasons is 23.

If Los Angeles maintains their pace they'll tie Edmonton (1988) for the quickest hoist (18) since 1987. Alternatively, if New York plays all seven games in each of their remaining series they'll break the record for the slowest hoist (25) held by Carolina (2006) and Boston (2011) and become the first team to skate in all 28 playoff games and win the Stanley Cup.
Fans prefer fewer games, but whatever number is needed will suffice.
The Detroit Red Wings won consecutive Cups in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. Prior to that, the Pittsburgh Penguins were champions in 1990-91 and 1991-92.
