The distance has remained the same since ancient Greecian times. It has consistantly been 26.1 miles or 42.1 kilometers. It was made that distance because it is the distance from the battle of marathon to the city of Athens, in which a messenger ran back and forth from during the battle. No one changed it.

Why is a marathon that exact distance?

At the 1908 Olympic Games in London, the marathon distance was changed to 26.2 miles to cover the ground from Windsor Castle to White City stadium, with the 2.2 miles added on so the race could finish in front of royal family's viewing box. This added two miles to the course, and is the origin of the Marathon tradition of shouting "God save the Queen!" (or other words relating to the Queen) as mile post 24 is passed. After 16 years of extremely heated discussion, this 26.2 mile distance was established at the 1924 Olympics in Paris as the official marathon distance.

What distance is a marathon running race?

An "ordinary" marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards (26.22 miles) or 46145 yards. The Olympic marathon is 42.195 kilometers, which is longer by about 4.7 inches. Any marathon race may add up to 42 meters to assure that the actual course distance qualifies under IAAF rules (1 meter per kilometer).

Why is the length of the marathon 26 miles and 385 yards?

The length of a marathon was at first not fixed, since all that was important was that all athletes competed on the same course. The exact length of an Olympic marathon varied depending on the route established for each venue. The choice of distance was somewhat arbitrary. The first modern Olympics in 1896 had a marathon distance of 40 km. The starting point for the 1908 Olympic marathon in London was modified so that the Royal Family could have a good view and the length happened to be 42.195 km (26 miles 385 yards). For the next Olympics in 1912, the length was changed to 40.2 km and changed again to 42.75 km for the 1920 Olympics. Of the first 7 Olympic games, there were 6 different marathon distances between 40 and 42.75 km (40 km being used twice). A fixed distance of 42.195 km was adopted in 1921 by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) as the official marathon distance.
