Soccer originally came from England while a few teenagers were mucking around in a College Football match.
A game played in the streets in England in which players were allowed to use any part of the body, including feet and hands, to take the ball from one side to the other. From this game derived Soccer, Football, and Rugby.

It derived from the name of "Associated Football" Just as the US' population adds "-y" or "-ish" to informally create an adjective from a noun, British young people (who were the ones who played the game), added "-er". Lose the "a" and you get "soccer."

The full name for "soccer" is "Association Football," which is so called to differentiate it from other games called Football. Association Football has so many syllables that it has been shortened to "Football." Then when Americans made there own football they renamed it soccer. Americans and Americans only call it soccer

That's the thing its not called 'Soccer' its called footy or football! XD lol

Yes it is called soccer and the inventors of the game, the brits, actually came up with the name. Orginally it was called Association Football to separate it from the thugs game (boy how that has changed). The term SOCcer comes from asSOCiation. The more popular term football has been used predominately around the world. Of course in the US we have to separate the game to the players who carry it in their hands and throw it in the air to football and to those who use their feet to kick a ball we call soccer. Only fitting that in the US we get it backwards when it come to the greatest game on earth. (well if the other activity men and women do can be call a game then soccer is second to that)

The name soccer is actually an abbreviation for 'association' that added an -er at the end. It was coined by the British in the 19th century.
