Actually, McCovey played first base and left field for the San Francisco Giants. McCovey was a rookie with the Giants in 1959 playing 51 games at first base as the Giants had Orlando Cepeda as their regular first baseman. In 1960, McCovey played first in 71 games, while Cepeda moved to left field for 91 games and first for 63 games. In '61 McCovey played exclusively at first for 81 games while Cepeda again split time between left and first. In 1962, when the Giants won the NL pennant, it was Cepeda who was the primary first baseman in 160 games, but also play left in 2 games. McCovey in '62 tried his hand in left field for 57 games and played just 17 games at first. In 1963, McCovey was primarily a left fielder, playing there in 135 games, as Cepeda again was the primary first baseman. In 1965, McCovey was again in left for 83 games. After Cepeda was traded to St. Louis for the 1966 season, McCovey was moved back to first and remained there for the rest of his career.
