McCovey was a rookie with the Giants in 1959 playing 51 games at first base as the Giants had Orlando Cepeda as their regular first baseman. In 1960, McCovey played first in 71 games, while Cepeda moved to left field for 91 games and first for 63 games. In '61 McCovey played exclusively at first for 81 games while Cepeda again split time between left and first.
