When he was called up to play for the New York Giants in May 1951, the 20-year-old Mays was afraid of failure. He struggled during his first weeks with the team and then tearfully asked manager Leo Durocher to send him back to the minors. Durocher comforted Mays and persuaded him that he would play center field for the Giants for as long as Durocher was there. The rest is history.
