Willie Cager was born to a very poor family in the Bronx, New York. In 1966 he was part of the Texas Western basketball team that won the college National Championship. Texas Western is now the University of Texas at El Paso.
Texas girls basketball changed from 6-player teams to 5-player teams in the 1970-1971 season. This transition was part of a broader movement to align girls' basketball with the existing 5-player format used in boys' basketball. The change aimed to promote the sport and enhance its popularity among female athletes in the state.
