Retired players fight for coveted jobs as sports broadcasters (past winners of these positions have included John Kruk, Harold Reynolds, Paul O'Neill, and Joe Morgan).

All retired Baseball players who cannot get these jobs are given the 'Ted Williams' treatment (popularized by Futurama). The 'Ted Williams Treatment' involves having your head removed and placed in cryonic biostasis.

Clearly, this is a scary prospect for players who don't have enough media savvy to work as a broadcaster. Retirement for these types of players translates to certain death... which is why Ricky Henderson still refuses to retire.
