After leaving Baseball in 1939, Gehrig rejected numerous job offers. He finally accepted the position of New York City Parole Commissioner beginning in January 1940 because it represented an opportunity for public service. He was appointed to a ten-year term, but had to resign because of the worsening effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ("Lou Gehrig's disease") just sixteen months later, one month before his death.
Unfortunately, Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with a terminal illness midseason and was bedridden for the last days of his life. He didn't participate in anything due to the sickness. A movie was made of his life and included his real life Yankee Stadium goodbye. In his address he said he was the "luckiest man in the world". Lou Gerhig was a true baseball hero to every baseball fan. His nickname was the "Iron horse" because he played a record number of consecutive games. His record lasted until Carl Ripken Jr. broke it in the 1980's.
