After pennants are exchanged between the captains, the home captain chooses a coin face. The coin is flipped and the winning captain chooses which side of the pitch to play toward, or to have the ball. If he chooses the ball, the captain who lost the toss gets to choose the pitch side, and vice versa.
Players go to their respective pitch sides and only the team who won the ball in the coin toss can have players in the centre circle, but always behind the halfway line. The game starts with a pass, normally to a player right next to the ball, or back to the midfielders.
