2) A Basketball team called the Kentucky Colonels that played in the American Basketball Association between 1967-1976. They played at the Convention Center for three years and Freedom Hall for six years. When the ABA-NBA merger took place after the 1975-76 season, the Colonels were not one of the teams accepted by the NBA and their owner, John Brown, accepted a $3 million payoff to fold. Famous players on the team included Artis Gilmore, Louie Dampier, and Maurice Lucas.
