Villanova has won 1 College Basketball Championship and it took place back in 1985 defeating the Georgetown Hoyas.
It may have been Fielding Yost of Michigan back in 1901. Michigan football had just beaten several local teams and people thought it would be interesting if they played Stanford (I think) in California in the Parade of Roses (hence, the Rose Bowl). Michigan won 49-0. The 1901 Michigan team was remarkedly successful, but not the first NCAA champion. The NCAA does not crown a champion in the top division, but rather leaves it to "Bowls and Polls" to decide. That is why they are called "National Poll Champions" in the NCAA Official Records Book. The first "poll champion" listing is shared by Princeton and Rutgers, in 1869.
