What Lenin did impose on Russia after the October Revolution and at the start of the Russian Civil War was a system known as "war communism." This was not true communism but a forced appropriation of agricultural produce to support the war effort.

Lenin did believe in Communism, but he did not believe it had to come about the way Karl Marx said it would. Marx thought communism would evolve irresistibly from capitalism to socialism to communism. Although Lenin believed in the concept of communism, he felt it could come about through a a strong central government.
