On February 4, 2007, Super Bowl XLI (41) was the first where both head coaches were black. Tony Dungy was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and Lovie Smith was the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
The Colts won the game 29-17 to make Tony Dungy the first black head coach to win an NFL Super Bowl.

Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears. The first Super Bowl to have a team head coached by an African-American was Super Bowl XLI between the Bears and Indianapolis Colts. Ironically, both head coaches were African-American (Tony Dungy was the head coach of the Colts) but Smith was first as the Bears defeated the Saints in the NFC Championship game played several hours before the Colts defeated the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

The only African-American head coaches to lose in Super Bowl competition were Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears (Super Bowl XLI), Jim Caldwell of the Indianapolis Colts (Super Bowl XLIV) and Mike Tomlin (Super Bowl XLV). Smith's Bears lost to the Colts team coached by Tony Dungy, the first African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl. Tomlin's first Super Bowl appearance as a head coach was a victorious one. His Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23.
