The only African-American head coaches to lose in Super Bowl competition were Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears (Super Bowl XLI), Jim Caldwell of the Indianapolis Colts (Super Bowl XLIV) and Mike Tomlin (Super Bowl XLV). Smith's Bears lost to the Colts team coached by Tony Dungy, the first African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl. Tomlin's first Super Bowl appearance as a head coach was a victorious one. His Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23.

Tony Dungy was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and Lovie Smith was the head coach of the Chicago Bears. The Colts won the game 29-17 to make Tony Dungy the first black head coach to win an NFL Super Bowl.
