A Canadian named James Naismith invented it in Vermont when he was trying to come up with a sport to be played in the winter. His invention involved a soccer ball that you had to toss into peach baskets nailed up ten feet high. You couldn't dribble or move in any way when you had the ball. Some people recommended it be called Naismithball, but he went with Basketball. It sounds catchier anyway.
