Although it may not be a complete accounting, according to Sean Forman (the founder of Baseball-Reference.com) in an interview he did on RedSoxNation in 2005, there were 16,208 players listed on Baseball-Reference.com through the 2004 season. -----
As of the start of the 2007 season, that number is now 16,440.

This information is for the US only: For Major League Players - There are 30 Major League teams each with a 40 man roster. 30 x 40 = 1200 Then, on average, each team has 6 farm teams in its system with a roster of 25 to 30 players. So 6 x 30 x 30 = 5400. So in the United States there are approximately 6600 professional baseball players in the MLB and MiLB. Now do you also want to count players in the Independant Leagues as professional baseball players? Also I know that there is a huge system in Japan, Central America and South America. No clue as to find out how many professional players are in those countries.
