Heap Big question, there is some evidence that Baseball evolved out of an American Indian sun-worship custom known as the Sun Dance- not the Newman/Redford variety. Ripley popularized this theory in the twenties and in the sixties I can recall seeing some curious diagrams to back it up in Juvenile magazines-the basepaths originally (In Indian days) formed a continuous trench with spoil banks on the sides and a branch trench led directly to the Dugout- not the canoe variety! Like entering a garage form inside the house in modern buildings- I always thought this a very modern, Steve-Canyon all-weather touch- but it"s an old idea.

Baseball came about when cricket and rounders games evolved around the 1820's. Abner Doubleday did not invent the game but may have refined it to what it is today.
