The origin of the Olympic game is not known for certain, in Greek myth the games were established by Heracles son of Zeus (Hercules) all that is known that the Olympics had been established at some point prior to the 7th or 8th century BC. The Ancient Olympic game were held every four years; but were ended around the 4th century AD on the grounds that it involved pagan practices; inducing devotions to the Greek gods.

In the 19th century the Olympics were re-established as a cultural event with no religious context; the first of the modern games were in 1896.
