Answer: The awards were completely different in ancient Greece: the races were not about money and commercials, but about honour. The winners were given an olive branch and were celebrated throughout Greece and especially in their home town. Some cities would then sponsor their athletes and give them money-for instance Athens would grant them around 500 drachma (a fortune at the time). Others would give them similar prizes, including vats of olive oil. If their victory was outstanding, sculptors would make them statues and poets would sing odes about them.

No medals were awarded in the ancient Olympics. The winner received an olive wreath to wear on his head. It is also claimed that after the winner athlete returned to his home city they would pull down the city walls since they were no longer needed. The athletes who were taking part in the Olympic games knew that they would be honored for the rest of their lives and they would have the most important thing, eternal glory! And they were right since we still remember them and will honor them in the years to come.
