YES he did! I have a baseball from 1963 that's signed.

Best Wishes MICKEY C MANTLE

It was given to me from my Uncle, Who at that time was a Baltimore City Police Officer working at Baltimore Memorial Stadium. He was talking to my Uncle for a few minutes, and he presented him with a autograph ball.

YES, I am also looking to find out what it's worth.

Who was the scout that helped sign Mickey Mantle to his first big contract?

In 1948 playing semi-pro Ball as a shortstop in Baxter Springs (KS) Yankees' scout Tom Greenwade came to Baxter Springs to watch Mickey's teammate, third baseman Billy Johnson. During the game Mickey Mantle hit two homers, one right handed, and one left handed into a river well past the ballpark's fences. Greenwade wanted to sign Mickey on the spot but, upon finding out that he was only sixteen and still in high school, told him he would come back to sign him with the Yankees on his graduation day in 1949. Good to his word, Greenwade was there right on schedule, signing Mickey Mantle to a minor league contract with the Yankees Class D team in Independence. Why did Mickey Mantle try out for the New York Yankees?

Mickey Mantle never really 'tried out' for the Yankees. He was playing with a semi-pro team called the Baxter Springs Whiz Kids when a scout for the Yankees came to a game to watch one of his teammates. During the game Mantle hit two home runs, one righthanded and one lefthanded. The scout wanted to sign him immediately but couldn't because Mantle was only 16 years old. Mantle signed a Yankees contract on the day he graduated from high school. It was worth $400 with an $1,100 signing bonus.
