Manon Rhéaume was 20 years old when she played one period in goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a pre-season game against the St. Louis Blues. The date of the game was September 23, 1992. Rhéaume played in another Lightning exhibition game the following season, this time in net against the Boston Bruins. While those were here only two NHL appearances, she played numerous other games in NHL farm leagues, like the ECHL, QMJHL, and IHL.

The NHL isn't gender biased. In 1992, Manon Rhéaume became the first woman to play in the NHL (as a goaltender). She played in two exhibition, preseason games. Just like in the NFL, MLB, or NBA there are no rules to ban women; teams just don't consider female applicants (however few there are) as seriously.

Woman's hockey is a popular sport in Canada and there are several woman's minor leagues and formally a NWHL, which is now the Canadian Woman's Hockey League. Some differences are that body checking is not allowed in woman's hockey and players have to wear full-face masks.
