In 1985 I had trained for a triathlon in the Bud Light Triathlon Series in San Diego, California. Just prior to the event, a speaker presented a motivational talk to the triathletes. His name was Noel Johnson. He was 86 years old and had written a book called, "A Dud at 70, a Stud at 80". After the speech, I went up to him and asked what prompted him to write the book. He said, "I was 70 years old, living in a dingy apartment in North Park (a community in San Diego). I was 70 pounds overweight, smoked 5 packs of cigarettes a day, and was unable to walk but a few steps because of a weakened and damaged heart. "One day my son and daughter came to the apartment and told me they were going to put me into a nursing home. A switch in my brain flipped. 'No you're not!', I replied. I stopped smoking, started eating healthy foods, and began a gradual exercise program. Noel Johnson had just completed his 6th marathon prior to this event.
