How do you play softball?

Softball is played on a diamond shaped field, generally known as a Baseball diamond. The ball is bigger than the one used in baseball, but softball uses the same positions: catcher, pitcher, 1st basemen, 2nd basemen, 3rd basemen, short stop, and 3 outfielders (center, left, and right). The catcher wears a lot of protection on their knees (legs), chest , and face, and wears a catcher's mitt. When the ball is pitched, the player up to bat hits the ball with the bat, runs to 1st base, but depending on the hit, may attempt to get to 2nd, 3rd, or home. If the ball is caught by a player on the opposing team before touching the ground, then the batter is out. A player is also out if a member of the opposing team steps on the base, which a player is running to, before that player gets there. In this case, the member of the opposing team must have the ball in his/her hand. However, if it is not a force (when a player must go to the next base because the batter behind them must take their base) then a player must be tagged (touched by the ball) by a player from the opposing team in order for the player to be considered out. Sliding (throwing one's body at the base, as opposed to just running to it) is only used for when tagging is necessary to get that player out. There are usually 7 innings (both teams at bat before 3 outs counts as 1 inning) with nine players on the field at once.
