What records is Michel Fournier trying to break with his jump?
Michel Fournier, if successful, will break several world records when he jumps out of his balloon at 130,000 feet. Among these are records for distance (highest altitude for a human balloon flight and highest parachute jump), speed (fastest free fall) and time (longest free fall). One of his most unusual goals is to be the first to break the sound barrier with his own body.
Why is Michel Fournier jumping from outer space?
To begin with, Fournier's jump is planned to be from an altitude of 40 kilometers, which is not even close to being in space (the usual definition is that space begins at an altitude of 100 kilometers). In his jump from the stratosphere, Fournier hopes to set four world records: highest human balloon flight, highest altitude free fall, longest duration free fall, and highest speed free fall. Fournier was hoping to make contributions to science that will help astronauts survive at high altitudes. However, his most recent attempt to jump (May 27) was foiled due to a small charge of static electricity that resulted in the balloon separating from its load. Fournier hopes to make the jump in August, the next time weather conditions will be right for the flight.
