Michel Fournier, if successful, will break several world records when he jumps out of his balloon at 130,000 feet. Among these are records for distance (highest altitude for a human balloon flight and highest parachute jump), speed (fastest free fall) and time (longest free fall). One of his most unusual goals is to be the first to break the sound barrier with his own body.
Michel Fournier is a 64-year-old retired French army officer who is planning to jump from a balloon at an altitude of about 130,000 feet (roughly 25 miles) on May 26, 2008. Of the 15 minutes it will take for him to fall back through the atmosphere to Earth, he will spend 8 in free fall. The jump, if successful, could make him the first person to break the sound barrier with his own body.
