The optimal size for paintball barrels is roughly 10-14 inches. Anything less tends to release the ball before it has a chance to accelerate. Anything more can use up too much gas, cause inaccuracy if not held completely still. A good "sniper" could use a 16-18 inch barrel, but ONLY if it is held still, with a bi-pod, in the prone position. Trying to run around with a long barrel (16-21 inches) is not only difficult to maneuver, but is actually less accurate when moving, or standing and shooting.

If you are looking for one of the best 20 inch barrels, it would recommend a 20 in deathstix. I assume you are using this for woodsball, and it comes in a great looking camouflage coloring. It is made by a company based in Australia, though they are not very well known. Though something to consider is that studies have shown that a 14-16 in barrel is far superior to anything longer or shorter. Really when you purchase a 20 in barrel all your getting is an extra 6-8 in and the higher risks of breaking your barrel in a slide.

What would be the best paintball barrel and marker for sniping?

All guns shoot the same FPS, therefore have the same range. The only exeption to this is barrels that causes backspin like a flatline or APEX but this slows the paintball down faster and reduces the chance of the paintball actually breaking as well as decreasing accuracy as spin increases. The best barrel is a barrel that fits your paint perfectly, but since paintballs are imperfect you need to get as close as possible. Choose a barrel that has bore inserts so that you can match it to your paint or under/overbore if you prefer. your barrel is most accurate at around 14 inches, and unless you have a bipod, are in prone and will take careful aim for EACH shot a 20 inch barrel wont do you any good.

What is the difference between a 16 inch and 14 inch barrel in paintball?

Firstly the 16 is 2 inches longer. Secondly some say that this is where a paintball barrel overcomes the optimum barrel lenght and starts to use up more co2 to fire a paintball. Others claim this is at 18 inches. The exception to this are Tippmann's who waste a lot of C02 each shot, and have a velocity adjuster that does not change the amount the valve produces, but limits the amount the ball gets, the excess just gets blown out to a cyclone feed or response trigger or nothing if nothing is attached. This means they are technically more efficient with 18, 20, even 22 inch barrels, because you will play with velocity adjuster almost out, and will still shoot the proper fps.

Should I change my Mossberg 500A barrel to the 24 inch or leave it with the 20 inch barrel that is on it for turkey shooting?

If your 20 inch barrel has screw in chokes then get a full or extra full turkey choke tube and you'll be fine. Just make sure to pattern the shot with your particular barrel and choke combination. Also make sure you know where the point of impact will be with your sights. The 24 inch barrel would be fine also as long as it's properly choked etc.

The friction a paintball goes through?

I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at but I'll try. Paintballs go through the hopper, feedneck, chamber, barrel, and then any accessory you might have after the barrel. In the hopper and feedneck friction is not an issue however in the chamber and especially the barrel it becomes more important. A chamber that fits too loosely around the ball can cause inaccuracy but a chamber too small can slow or warp the ball. You have to get as little friction as you can while maintaining a fairly tight fit. Same things apply to the barrel. That's why barrel come in different bore sizes, to best match the paintball. A second reason friction comes up in paintball debate is the sniper barrel length issue. Many companies advertise 20" sniper barrel!!! The trouble with that is a 20" barrel adds no more accuracy then a 14" barrel. All it does is add more friction and slows the ball. ^^^ agreed, in all reality the first 8" of a barrel is for accuracy, after that its all porting to quiet it down, iv seen a 8" barrel shoot just as accurately as a 20" but the 8 took a lot more co2 to use (due to the short distance the ball has to accelerate) and the 20 was much quieter (due to the vast amounts of porting

Is the 24 inch barrel an after market modification to a 30-30 Marlin 336A made in 1949?

No, the 336A had a 24" barrel from the factory. The 336C or RC used a 20" barrel.
