I climb all the time. Neither me nor any of my friends have ever suffered more than a few scratches (which are more often caused by plant life on the hike there than the actual climbing). No matter how good you are, you will get scratches - some rocks are real pointy. :-)
If you don't know what you are doing, you can easily kill yourself. Even if you do know what you're doing, broken ankles sometimes happen. I think that is probably the most common rock climbing injury.
Go with someone experienced and wear a helmet and don't stand under the climber if you can help it - if a chunk of gets knocked off by a climber, it wont care if your safety conscientious or not. Even small rocks draw blood.
