The Kentucky Derby festival lasts a total of two weeks although the race only last about two minutes but it is known as the two most exciting minutes in sports.
The racehorse Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness in 2004, and placed second in the Belmont Stakes. He was retired to stud and is (at last report) at the Northview Stallion Station in Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania.
Technically, a mare is defined as a female horse over the age of three. A filly is a female horse three years or younger. Since the Kentucky Derby is a race for 3-year-olds only, no mare has ever won. However, three fillies have won the Kentucky Derby: Regret (1915); Genuine Risk (1980); and Winning Colors (1988).
Winning Colors [February 14, 1985 - February 17, 2008] was the last filly to win the Kentucky Derby. The young mare finished first in the 1988 Derby. She was the third and most recent of three fillies to claim victory in the world-famous race that's held yearly at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky.
In 2009, a filly name Raspberry Miss and another horse named Dr. Rap collided during a training session. Raspberry Miss died and Dr. Rap was injured. Eight Belles was the female horse that died in the 2008 Kentucky Derby. She twisted both of her front ankles right after she crossed the wire.
Eight Belles came in 2nd after running the race of her life, which sadly was the last race of her life. Time was 2 minutes, 3 1/2 seconds. Just after crossing the wire second after Big Brown, Eight Belles collapsed after breaking her front ankles and had to be euthanized on the racetrack.
It means they are disqualified. But I don't know what they did.
