Oliver Lewis [1856 - 1924], an African American who subsequently became a Kentucky businessman in Lexington, rode Aristides in the Kentucky Derby. He was the winning jockey on the winning horse. It was the very first time that the Derby was held. The historic date was the afternoon of May 17, 1875.
