In most tournaments, one need not "qualify," per se, but for some of the bigger ones, you have to attend a smaller, local event in which you must perform up to a certain level in order to qualify. Two of the more notable tournaments in America that require qualifying are the Junior Olympics and the Summer Nationals. With the Summer Nationals, however, you do not need to qualify if you Fencing in the U12 or U10 event.
