3 fencing eventsFoil: In foil, the target area is the chest and back. The game is contact and right of way. If fencer A attacks and Fencer B parries and does a riposte Fencer B scores. Epee: In Epee the target area is the whole body. Right of way rules do not apply, it is simply first to hit, with points going to both fencers if they both hit with 1/25th of a second.Sabre: In Sabre the target is above the waist. Hits are scored by slashing or lunging and has the most complicated right of way rules, for instance priority goes to the fencer who parries with the forte as opposed to the foible and is notoriously difficult to referee

It is called an Épée or a Rapier, in the time of the story it where called an Sabre. The Sabre is offen compared to the curved sword. But the original Sabre was developed as a cavalry weapon, which was used when fighting from horseback. This Sabre have no sharp edges and even the end was blunt. It was commonly used to hit with the full length of the blade. This creates more of the classic "swish" and sweeping movement.
A sabre is a light sword.
Individuals are direct elimination bouts of 15 touches and 3 3 minute periods. The fencer who has the most touches at the end or the fencer who reaches 15 first wins. Team competition has three people per weapon and each fencer fences each opponent. The bouts are 3 minutes long and are to 5 points. the fencer that has the most touches at the end or reaches 5 first wins. The team that wins the most bouts wins the match. Epee: Touches are scored by pressing the tip into the opponent (stabbing them) and can be scored anywhere on the body. That's basically it. Foil: Touches are point only. The target is the torso and groin. The fencer that initiates the attack has right-of-way (if both fencers touch the fencer with right of way wins the touch) until their attack ends or the opponent parries (blocks). Sabre: Touches are either the point or, more commonly, the blade. Target is the entire upper body. And right of way applies but, unlike foil, the forward movement of the fencer gives themright of way until the initiate and complete an attack.
A thrust is an extension of the arm, an attack. Much of the time, it's simply called a thrust. It would not be used in Sabre, but only in Epee and Foil, as Sabre does not hit with the point.
