A race horse can go up to about 40 mph. Quarter horses can go faster, but only for a quarter of a mile ( that's why they're called quarter horses, believe me, when they spook, they're stinking FAST)
Actually, the fastest recorded horse is somewhere between 55-60 mph but it is true that on race tracks they are averaging out about 40 mph. That is really fast if you ask me. I think that horses are a wonderful pets and some times you can ride them

Additional Information:
In both cases, the maximum speed is significantly higher.
These are the two most popular breeds of race horses today, originally owing their strength and speed to Arabians, imported to England (ca. 12th Century) and mixed with stronger, but slower English stock. this produced the Thoroughbred. The Quarter horse is an American breed (ca. 1800), owing its strength and swiftness mostly to its Thoroughbred ancestry.
All racing horses have of course, been bred for their ability to run. Through the years of selective breeding, Both these breeds have been infused with different and newer breeds, in attempts to create faster and less fragile race horses than the originals. Also, these breeds have evolved to be taller, bigger, faster, and stronger race horses with a natural initial jump.
Quarter Horses owe their breed name from their ability to run a fast quarter mile. However, while Quarter Horses are great sprinters they are not so good at longer distances. They don't have the running stamina to race over a ten furlong course (about 2 km or 1 1/8 m) like their Thoroughbred counterparts.
The fastest thoroughbred can run up to 40mph! And for a regular thoroughbred they usually run up to 35-40 mph (55-65 kilometers per hour).
