The Victorian Football League commenced as a formal entity in 1896 with the following 8 clubs: Geelong, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, St. Kilda, Fitzroy (now the Brisbane Lions), Melbourne and South Melbourne (now the Sydney Swans). In 1897, the competition began in earnest with Essendon being the Champions.
