Since 1969, the Grey Cup Game has always been played on a Sunday. Prior to that, with one exception in 1962, the game had always been played on a Saturday. The 1962 exception occurred when a "pea soup" fog rolled in off Lake Ontario during the game. The stadium was situated right beside the lake. By half time, few fans were able to see much of the field, and many none at all, but the game continued into the fourth quarter. One of the injured Hamilton players, who had not dressed for the game, jokingly asked on the sideline, and within earshot of Hamilton Coach Jim Trimble, "Wouldn't this be a good time to run the Statue of Liberty?" (In the Statue of Liberty play, the quarterback drops back into the pocket, as if to pass, while a speedy halfback, who has been positioned as a receiver on one side, runs toward the quarterback, receives a hand-off from the quarterback, and continues running around the other side. The receivers on that side, meanwhile, have all run deep pass routes, leaving no defenders in that area to tackle the halfback.) Jim Trimble, commenting to the media afterward, said, "Being the football genius I am, as soon as I heard him say "Statue of Liberty," I immediately sent in Garney Henley (his fastest halfback, and probably the fastest man in the league) and told him to run the Statue of Liberty." Henley took the hand-off, disappeared into the fog, and was not seen again until he surfaced in the other team's end zone. Shortly thereafter, officials determined that it was not safe for the players to continue playing the game. After a considerable delay, officials decided to halt the game and resume play the following day (Sunday). Ever since, the two-day game has been affectionately known as the "Fog Bowl."
