Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali were very different. For one, Liston was quiet but brutal in the ring. Ali was outspoken and knew how to agitate his opponents and crowds. He was also the master showman and knew how to sell tickets to his fights. Liston was sick and tired of Ali's taunting and promised to destroy him in the ring during their first encounter.

It has never been proven Sonny Liston cheated. Sonny's corner claimed Ali's blindness was due to chemicals used to treat Liston's cut in the fight. However a boxing historian, Bert Sugar, found at least two other bouts of Liston's with similar occurrences. That in addition with Liston's street lifestyle and prior criminal record was enough to suggest Liston was involved in foul play in the view of many boxing critics.

The first person to knock Cassius Clay, who later became known as Muhammad Ali, to the canvas was Sonny Liston. This occurred during their heavyweight championship fight on February 25, 1964, when Clay was still a young and relatively inexperienced boxer. Liston knocked Clay down in the fourth round, but Clay managed to recover and ultimately won the fight, claiming the heavyweight title.
