Sumo (pron. su-moh) Wrestling originated in Japan as a ritual ceremony to the gods of good harvest. It is said that the Japanese people came about through the outcome of a Sumo contest between the gods. Sumo gained the patronage of the Imperial Court in the 8th century and never lost popularity. In the days of the Shogun and the Samurai, Sumo was used for its military usefulness and Jujitu was developed from it.

Wrestling has always been a human activity. Sumo as we know it really evolved during the Edo Period (circ. 1757-1792) in Japan. Large groups of unemployed Samurai banded together and held wrestling matches to raise money for themselves and to help rebuild some of the temples.

The majority of sumo are Japanese. There are some other countries making inroads into the system, including Mongolia, Samoa and the US (Hawaiians).
