They come in all sorts of sizes, but the traditional size for a Tatami mat is 90cm by 180cm. That is just under 3 feet by 6 feet. The competition area for a judo match is an 8 to 10 meter square mat. The outer meter is red and a participant can only be there for a few seconds before the referee will move them back to the center of the mat.

In high school and college wrestling you can score points by taking an opponent down, exposing their back from 3-5 seconds, escaping from the bottom position, and reversing an opponent from the bottom position. A match is won by either having more points when time expires, gaining a 15 point lead on an ooponent (technical fall), or by getting an opponent's shoulderblades flush to the mat for a solid second (pin). There are no tapouts or submissions allowed in wrestling but competing in high school and or college wrestling will greatly help your mma skills due to great similarities in the sports.
