It depends - every school will be different, and then every test will be a little different.

Examples
  • At one school white belt and yellow belts must demonstrate their forms and their one-step sparring techniques. Green belts and above must also demonstrate forms but instead of one-step sparring they demonstrate free-sparring. Blue belts must demonstrate target drills. Brown belts must demonstrate three-step sparring. Red belts and above must demonstrate breaking techniques.
  • At another school every belt has a form (hyung). Each time you grade you have to demonstrate all the forms from your white belt to your current belt. You have to demonstrate all new techniques and previously learned techniques, including one-step sparring, self-defense techniques, and board breaking. You must answer all the questions asked by the examiners. You also have to do certain exercises such as pushups, sit-ups and squats.

Every Taekwondo school sets its own curriculum so test questions and rank advancements will vary from school to school. You need to ask your own instructor what they require for test requirements at your school.

At some schools the orange stripe is an intermediate advancement between yellow belt and orange belt. It represents approximately nine months of training. The following are examples of possible test questions.

  • Name different types of Taekwondo stances (walking, front, back, horse, etc)
  • What is Master (blank) full name? (know your instructor's full name)
  • Name of a Taekwondo school (Dojang)
  • Name of a Taekwondo uniform (Dobok)
  • Name of a Taekwondo belt (Di or Dhee)
  • In taekwondo sparring, what are the legal punching targets? (learn the permitted targets - usually the torso above the waist, excluding the spine)
  • In taekwondo sparring, what are the legal kicking targets? (learn the permitted targets - usually torso, excluding spine, and head)
  • Translate the following from English to Korean:

one 하나 (hana)

two 둘 (dul)

three 셋 (set)

four 넷 (net)

five 다섯 (daseot)

six 여섯 (yeoseot)

seven 일곱 (ilgop)

eight 여덟 (yeodeolp)

nine 아홉 (ahop)

ten 열 (yeol)

Questions for Taekwondo grade promotions will be different for each organization, and/or individual Dojang (school). The best way to find these questions is to ask your instructor.
