Karate comes from Okinawa, which is now part of Japan. It was created by combining the local Wrestling with Kung Fu techniques from China. Tradition has it that the origins of Kung Fu come from India. It is now a part of Japan. It was an independent country at one time, a tributary of China.

Karate originated in the Ryukyu Islands (now known as Okinawa in Japan). Okinawa at that time was a trade hub for countries like Korea, China, Philippines and Japan. In addition to trading the goods, there was also an exchange of traditions of these countries. Chinese were experts in Martial Arts while Okinawa had their own martial arts called 'Te'. Some Okinawans combined Chinese White Crane Kung Fu and their own martial art to form the early stages of karate. After that many martial arts experts keep on developing these styles to form their own ryu (style).

Example-

Choshin Chibana founded Shorin-ryu,

Gichin Funakoshi founded Shotokan,

Kenwa Mabuni founded Shito-ryu,

Chojan Miyagi(friend of Kenwa Mabuni) founded Goju-ryu

  • Gichin Funakoshi learned kata from Kenwa Mabuni's dojo for expanding shotokan katas.
  • Kenwa Mabuni practiced Shuri-te from legendary Ankō Yasutsune Itosu.
  • Anko Itosu also taught Gichin Funakoshi who formed the Japanese style of Shotokan.
  • Karate has over 100 kata. Depending on the style and instructor, a school will focus on less than 20 of them. A Blackbelt will have learned about 18 kata. Shito-ryu has about 50 kata and has two branches of kata- Itosu-ke(teacher- Anko Itosu) and Higaonna-ke (teacher- Higaonna Kanryo)
  • Higaonna kanryo taught both Chojan and Mabuni but the styles they form i.e., Goju-ryu and Shito-ryu are completely different as shito-ryu is mid-long range while Goju-ryu is short range fighting style.

All these styles are originated from the same martial art and hence they all are called karate.

Okinawa is the country of origin for karate. The word is made up of two characters. The second one is te, meaning hand. The first can mean two different things, though it is said the same way. Kara can mean China or Empty.
