A fencer can become rated by Fencing in (if in America) USFA-certified tournaments that contain a certain amount of people in your event that may require certain rankings. The better you do in these tournaments, the higher ranking you'll get. For example: A USFA-certified event that includes at least 8 people will become an "E" Event. The winner will collect an E ranking, plus the year it is. IF it is 2009, he/she collects an E09. Also, An A4 USFA-certified event requires at least 64 fencers, with 12 A ranked fencers, 12 B or higher, and 12 C or higher. In the top 8 finishers, there must be 4 A's, and there must be 4 B's or higher in the top 12. Those who place in the top 8 get A rankings, 9-16 get B rankings, 17-24 get C rankings, 25-32 get D rankings, and 33-48 get E rankings, all of these plus the current year. Should you earn a ranking that you already have, you will renew it, getting a different year tag if necessary, and potentially adding on to your national points.
