You can start by looking at the ABAE website where you will find details on becoming a qualified boxing tutor. To gain your level 1 or level 2 coach status you will need to either speak to your local ABA affiliated club or speak to the region secretary for your area. Google "Teddy Atlas;" if you can find his Boxing organization his website should have a list somewhere. Teddy Atlas may be the last old fashioned trained Boxing coach; here in the U.S. at least, don't even consider taking up Boxing unless the Atlas name is behind them, or, they have a state certification, preferably from any Boxing comission. The scary thing about Boxing, is that believe it or not even in the old days, any opinionated arm chair expert could put on a towel, walk into a gym and say "I'll make you a champion." Its a bit scary I know but, those are the facts.
At the top of my head, the list of qualifications I can think of are;
1) They need to be qualified athletic trainers period, in a general sense; they need to have a broad knowledge base on everything and anything both cardio and strength training related, specially nutrition, although, for Boxing you don't need anything fancy. More to the point, some bodybuilding supplements will in fact slow you down; they're designed for mass building (some), not sports performance.
2) They need to know how to deal with cuts, and general sports injuries.
3) They need handed down wisdom from a previous trainer regarding "fighter psychology;" a degree, no matter how big, won't a boxing coach make. The "psychology" of fighting has to be drawn from raw experience, and years of accumulated wisdom need to be handed down, a true Boxing coach has to know how to talk to his guys, and knowing how to talk to them isn't something that can be learned academically. Finding "legacy" boxing coaches, individuals trained by legends to be good boxing coaches are difficult to find anymore. A good boxing coach knows how to deal both with a broken body, and a broken mind, let me put it that way. Part of the reason Frazier was able to topple Ali, despite being such a thin skinned individual whose feelings were easily hurt, was his corner; they knew how to talk to him so that Ali's fast talk did not get to him during that fight where the infamous left hook dropped Ali. In the modern ring game much of that is lost.
4) Although not required, it is prefered that a Boxing coach had at least 2 or 3 professional ring fights. That is, they have to know how it feels to be hit in the face. Its not required but its preferred; many of the legendary coaches of old, were fly and lightweights. The really small boxers need to take up Boxing as kids because owing to their diminiutive size they tend to be victims of bullying, because they take up boxing to fight much larger opponents, or at least they used to, they understood the game better than even the larger weight divisions. Some of the greatest champions in the light heavy and heavyweight division were all trained by small guys. Again, the little guys need to know their boxing better than the big ones, because, as kids they were bullied. If you need a Boxing coach you DO need to pay attention to what weight class they used to box in.
In the end though google "Teddy Atlas;" if he has a Boxing website, obviously the man is more qualified to answer this question.
