The Honus Wagner T206 tobacco card has a high value because of it's scarcity. At one time there were only three known example of this card. Although there have been many more discovered since, it is still a rare, and sought after card.

The 2.8 million dollar 1909 T206 Honus Wagner card was the card that belonged to Wayne Gretzky, and I am sure this is the reason why the price is inflated. When Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall bought the T206 Honus Wagner card in 1991 for $451,00 there were also less known example of the card at the time.

Other T206 Honus Wagner cards have recently sold in the $200,000. -$400,000. price range. This would be closer to the market value of this card. The famous "Gretzky T206 Honus Wagner" Baseball card will have a higher value than all other T206 Wagner cards because of it's history, and should be valued as a separate item.

In the early 1900's, many baseball cards made then were sold in packs of cigars. However, Honus Wagner did not want kids buying cigars to get his card and was against smoking. He made the tobacco company stop making his card and that is how there are only a handful of his 1909 tobacco card left today. The last card on public display indicated the card was worth about 3 million dollars.

In 1909, many tobacco companies issued a series of baseball cards with their products. These were the T-206 series of cards. There were cards of every player, but Honus Wagner, the best player in the league, opposed cigarette smoke. So, he legally forced the companies to take his card out of circulation, but some already got out. These cards are now worth millions. Hope this has helped.
