It's worth a few dollars, if someone wants to pay it. Because no Racers cards of Gretzky were produced in the 1970s. There's a "National Sports Card" card that was mass-produced in the early 1990s, and some crooked dealers tried to sell it as a "1978 rookie." It's not. Gretzky's best cards are the 1979-80 Topps and OPC cards (OPC is valued higher), as well as an oversized 1979 Sportscaster card that's pretty sweet.

Wayne Gretzgy was never drafted. He was originally signed by the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA in 1978. The Racers sold his contract to the Oilers because of financial problems. The WHA merged with the NHL in 1979.
His NHL rookie season began with the Edmonton Oilers in 1979. But, he started his professional career in the WHA with the Indianapolis Racers and was traded to Edmonton for Mark Messier.

Wayne Gretzky was never drafted. He had a WHA contract with the Indianapolis Racers. In 1979 when the WHA merged with the NHL the NHL team associated was allowed to keep 2 players from their WHA team. Gretzky was obviously a choice for Edmonton and was therefore never drafted into the NHL.
