Best Answer

yes they can

They make their own wind.

The true wind starts the boat moving forwards, as the boat moves forwards it effectively makes wind that appears to be coming from directly ahead, called induced wind. These two winds (true and induced) combine to form apparent wind, as this is the combination of the two winds it is usually stronger stronger, therefore the boat is now sailing in more wind than the true wind and can therefore sail faster than it.

Wind. You can also attach a machine that spins in the wind, generating electrical power.

How does a sail work?

Different sails work differently. Sailboats tend to catch wind and cause the boat to be pushed by this action. The more square footage of sail you have the more power you are sailing with. Ice boats use the sail as a wind edge. They do better when going into a wind. The wind passes over the sail on both sides. One side has more pressure then the other side. As a result, the ice boat is capable of moving several times faster then the wind. Speeds of as much as 100 mph have been recorded.

How was wind power used historically?

What Are The Uses Of Wind Power?

Wind power propels sail boats, and powers wind turbines. It is not as widely used as coal, natural gas or oil.

Why was the triangular lateen sail an improvment over the old square-rigged sail?

The lateen sail was used at the same time a square sail was used, but has different uses. The square sail is fine if you have a heavy boat and always fiind a wind that is blowing in the direction you want to go. Under such conditions, a lateen sail isn't much of an improvement. It was only once boats were made lighter (to faster get from the Atlantic to the Orient) that the triangular sails were an advantage. Also, if the wind is often blowing sideways to the way you want to go, a square sail, even if angled, doesn't work as well as a lateen sail. A triangular sail actually has a bit of lift to it so you can point your boat closer to the eye of the wind and still sail. This makes it ideal for sailing in and out of harbors and along the coasts. So small boats orginated the lateen sail for dexterity.
