How they interpret those anxiety symptoms is what determines whether their performance is positively or negatively affected e.g. if they think having butterflies in their stomach is a sign that they are nervous and about to fail, then they probably will. If they think butterflies are a sign of readiness to compete, then they will probably perform well.
