Are athletes performing work when engaged in sports?

Yes, athletes are performing work from the point of view of physics because they are moving their bodies through space in a definite direction caused by an external force. Athletes do work while walking, running, jumping, swimming, punching, kicking, or throwing one's opponent as in wrestling. Not only are athletes doing work in terms of moving their bodies but they are also doing work with regards to the equipment they use in their particular sports. Athletes also perform work when they throw a ball or javelin, hit a ball using some club such as a bat, and lift weights. This idea from physics also parallels with the general notion of work. Athletes are also working in the sense that they are trying to achieve a goal or purpose in their particular sports, namely to win or beat their competition, by exerting a great deal of physical and mental energy.
